What Is Diabetes Mellitus?
Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterised by persistently elevated blood glucose levels. The underlying mechanism differs between types, but the consequence is the same: glucose accumulates in the bloodstream because it cannot enter and be used by cells as it should.
Two main mechanisms are responsible:

Routine blood work may show a high blood sugar level before any symptoms are recognised. The symptoms that do occasionally appear in prediabetes include:
